The shawarma connection

You might have read my pilot blog written by Cookie. This one is all about Cookie’s adoption story.

Does 13 sound like an unlucky number? Well, in my case, it’s one of my luckiest numbers because it was on 13th November 2017, Cookie adopted me!

Start of something beautiful

It was the time when T and I were looking to upgrade our home to a more spacious one. We had talked about adopting a dog someday but never knew the day would come so soon.

I remember how adoption became a frequent topic of discussion during our chilling scenes with Abhirupa and Naireet, aka the grubtrotters. They had solutions to every hurdle we put across for getting a dog. So much so that they ended up offering us their place till we found one of our own that could accommodate a dog! This journey of losing our hearts to Cookie would never have happened without them!

Impulse!

Ever since I can remember, I have been an impulsive person. All I wanted was to get a yes from T. She calling and enquiring about an adoption post on Facebook was too much of a yes for me! The only question was ‘when?’.

Surprise!

The next day, yes the very next day, I decided to surprise T. After she left for work, Naireet and I went to meet the puppy. The one we saw in the picture was adopted, but thankfully there were 3 more in the litter. I assumed I would feel a strong bond towards one and make an instant choice. While all three were adorable, I chose Cookie because he had a bald spot on his leg.  My idea was that it’s anyway difficult for Indie dogs to find homes, let alone one with a bald spot!

T came back from work to the puppy surprise! That was the time when I could ‘literally’ see a mix of shock, happiness, fear, excitement, and some other emotions I can’t describe, simultaneously on T’s face! But thankfully she decided to stick with happiness and we had our first dog, Cookie!

New place, new people

Back at home Cookie was gloomy for obvious reasons, and we felt terrible. Anyhow, we decided to give Cookie some time to adjust, but he showed no signs of comfort. Despite Abhirupa’s best attempts, he refused to eat or drink anything. At this point, we were quite worried. All sorts of questions popped up, “Did we make a mistake?”, “Is Cookie ok?”, “Are we doing something wrong?”, and what not!

Love unwrapped!

To lighten the mood, we ordered shawarma. As soon as the food arrived, Cookie became alert and conscious. His nose was puckering and his eyes were searching for something. Having no prior experience with dogs, we had no idea what was going on. We decided it would be best to take him to the vet after having our food.

With all these thoughts running in my mind, I unwrapped the shawarma. And voila, magic happened! Cookie’s eyes lit up and he came running to me from across the room.  I offered him a piece of chicken from the shawarma and he gobbled it almost with my fingers! T joined the party and there it was, we had our first big moment with Cookie and the most beautiful one. Our adoption story was hence a yummy success.

Even now, every time there is shawarma in the house, Cookie drools a pool!

Our ‘Dog’servations –

  • Adopting a dog is a huge commitment of more than 10 years. Don’t do it on a whim, don’t give puppies as gifts, and make sure all family members are on the same page.
  • After adoption dogs take some time to decompress and get used to their new surroundings. It can take 3-5 months for the dog to feel safe and comfortable enough to bond with you. Please be patient!
  • Most importantly, always try to adopt a dog in need instead of buying.

Feel free to contact us if you are planning to adopt a dog or have any queries about adoption. Do share your adoption story to Cookie’s Instagram handle, The Great Indian Dog.
